Bright New Things

Our Bright New Things initiative champions designers who place sustainable innovation at the heart of what they do. Each season, we’ll introduce at least four new labels to our Bright New Things network, so now you can keep up with current trends while keeping your conscience clean.

We are committed to ensuring that 50% of our products are better for people and the planet by 2022.

Shop Buying Better products

Organic

It’s estimated that 16% of all insecticides are used to grow cotton – more than any other single crop. Many of these insecticides are known to have adverse effects on human and environmental health and cotton is just one of many agricultural crops used in the clothes we wear, the beauty products we apply to our skin and the food we eat. By shopping products in our Organic edit, you’re helping support farming systems that are better for human and environmental health.

What you can do
Choose items made using certified organic materials and ingredients. 

Did you know?
You can help further reduce chemical pollution by opting for an eco-friendly washing detergent that breaks down naturally. 

British Makers

Since its heyday the British textile industry has faced a steep decline, meaning a loss of traditional skills and jobs. Wool fleeces now command such a low price that some farmers resort to burning or burying them. Our British Makers edit includes products that are manufactured in the UK, helping to support local businesses and communities.

What can you do
Look out for brands that have committed to making the majority of their products in the UK, celebrating the materials and skills that are locally available.

Saving Water

Around 783 million people have no access to clean drinking water, yet an average pair of jeans is created with enough water to sustain a family of four for a month. Our Saving Water edit offers includes products that are made to ensure our most precious resource is being treated with the respect it deserves.

What can you do
Invest in brands that implement innovative practices and processes, helping to turn the tide on wasteful water consumption and water pollution. 

Did you know?
It can take up to 4,000 litres of water to produce the average pair of jeans – that’s enough water to fill 50 average-sized bath tubs.

Vegan

The number of Vegans in the UK quadrupled between 2014 and 2018, driven by a growing awareness of animal welfare issues and the impact of industrial agriculture on the environment. Animal-derived ingredients are extensively used in beauty products so our Vegan edit allows you to easily navigate your way to vegan-friendly beauty products.

What you can do
Look out for beauty brands that publicly state they are vegan

According to the latest research by the Vegan Society (2016), there are an estimated 540,000 vegans in Great Britain…and counting! 

Reducing Waste

It is estimated that around 600 million tonnes of products and materials enter the UK economy each year and only 115 million tonnes are recycled at the end of their life. Our Reducing Waste label offers an edit of refillables and products which have been created by upcycling, recycling and regenerating waste into innovative new materials, components and ingredients.

What you can do
- Purchase products made from recycled material 
- Use refillable products – washing liquid to perfume, the options are out there 
- Reduce your use of single-use plastic

300,000 tonnes of clothing ends up in household bins every year with around 20% going to landfill and 80% being incinerated. 

Forest Friendly

The palm oil in your moisturiser, the viscose in the lining of your jacket, the rubber in the sole of your shoe and the paper in your notebook; all these daily staples come from trees. Trees are a valuable part of our ecosystems, but ancient forests are being destroyed or cleared for industrial plantations (e.g. palm oil plantations). Our Forest Friendly edit helps you shop products that use materials derived from sustainably managed forests or that use palm oil alternatives. 

What you can do
- Check for the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) mark on packaging, paper and timber products 
- Support fashion brands with the Canopy Style pledge
- Buy food and beauty products which are palm oil free (e.g. Selfridges Selection) or contain certified sustainable palm oil

1 in 4 people globally are dependent on forests for their livelihoods and trees produce 28% of the oxygen we breathe.

Cruelty Free

Animal testing has been widely used in the past to evaluate the safety of cosmetic ingredients and products but there are now many alternative methods to ensure product safety and thousands of ingredients already deemed safe to use. Cosmetics tested on animals have been banned in the European Union since 2013; a significant step forward but not always a complete guarantee that the ingredients included in the product are no longer tested on animals elsewhere in the world or to meet the requirements of other regulations. That’s why we have created this edit, so you can be confident your beauty products are approved by the globally-recognised gold standard for cruelty free beauty.

What you can do
Shop our edit and look out for products from companies that have been approved as cruelty free.

Supporting Communities

Many people are involved in the cultivation and creation of the products that we consume in our daily lives. The question is: would we want to share the lives of those who grew the cotton to make our T-shirts or mined the gold to make our jewellery? Our Supporting Communities edit includes products created with fair trade principles at the heart of the production process, ensuring fair working conditions, pay and more.

What you can do
- Look for products certified by the Fairtrade Foundation
- Look for products which are made by manufacturers and artisan groups who adhere to the World Fair Trade Organisation standard

There are over 1.66 million farmers and workers in 1,411 producer organisations across the Fairtrade system. 

Responsible Leather

Wearing skins to cover our skin has been part of our culture since we were hunter gatherers. Today we manufacture about 2.4 billion square metres of leather each year to make bags, shoes, belts, jackets, furniture and a multitude of other products; it's safe to say we love leather but this long-standing love affair has long-standing impacts on our planet.

What you can do
- Look out for brands who are members of the Leather Working Group
- Look out for products made using recycled or upcycled leather 

Did you know?
Tanneries are a major contributor to water pollution, the Buriganga River in Bangladesh has been known to turn black from the toxic chemicals including those released by the tanning industry. Responsible leather uses less water, less chemicals and overall reduces the environmental impact of leather tanning

What you can do
Spread the word! Support emerging brands who pioneer sustainable design by sharing their stories, helping to inspire a more sustainable (and oh-so-stylish) future.

Doing the right thing

We believe that meaningful actions speak louder than words, which is why we have banned the following items from all our stores:

-  No single-use plastic water and fizzy drinks bottles, straws, carrier bags, microbeads or packaging for online orders

- No animal fur

- No foie gras

- No endangered fish or seafood

- No shark oil (squalene) in beauty products

Working with our partners

Our commitment to ethical trade is underpinned by Selfridges’ Ethical Trading Requirements which are legal requirements within the terms and conditions of doing business with us.

We want to ensure that products sold by Selfridges are produced under humane working conditions and with respect for workers and their human rights, that animals are treated and transported humanely and that suppliers minimise their impact on the environment.

We believe in using our voice to engage our brand partners in an active dialogue about key environmental issues. Project Ocean advocates for life under water and highlights the urgent need to tackle plastic pollution. Forests will be our major focus for 2020 and beyond, celebrating ecosystems that are vital to the health of our planet. Read more about our position on forest-related materials here.

SEDEX

Early in 2014, we became members of SEDEX (the Supplier Ethical Data Exchange, if you were wondering), a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to improving transparency and visibility in global supply chains.

Membership of SEDEX helps us work together with our suppliers to create a culture of transparency across our supply chain and to inform our buying decisions.

Positive Luxury

We also work with Positive Luxury, a platform for positive living, whose butterfly logo can be found on product pages for brands that are following a wide range of sustainable and anti-cruelty practices. You can find out more about their story here
